PASTOR Gilbert

He was born in a poor district of Marseille in 1932 and lived there until 1970. He then moved to Haute-Provence. He met the Russian painter and poet, Boris Bojnev, in 1948 whose influence is felt. Gilbert Pastor met the Lyon art dealer, Paul Gauzit, in 1975 and he regularly presented his work from then on in the Le Lutrin Gallery at Lyon. He exposed, amongst others, at the Béatrice Soulié Gallery in 2000.

PENCRÉAC'H Stéphane

After initially studying history, he did not go to art school but started painting (1992 - 1993) and organising events centred on his works. This led to a series of collective exhibitions during 1996 with Corpet, Hybert, Gouéry and Dezeuze. He was noticed by a critic and continued his pictorial career with the 'Je t'aime' exhibition in 1997. A second series of exhibitions entitled 'Action Directe' brought him to public attention again in 1999. He participated in the 'Big Crunch' organised by Richard Leydier in 2000 and realised his first ceiling. He relapsed at the Manoir de Cologny in Geneva with ‘Zéro / Zéro’. ‘Le paradis est un endroit où il ne se passe jamais rien’ was his first individual exhibition at Paris (June 2000). He created the ’Arabitude’ project with the support of Francis Hybert in 2001. This huge exhibition met with great success and really propelled him onto the French artistic scene.

PETIT Marc

His childhood was spent at Cahors and he realised his first sculptures when he was 14 years old. He was friends with two sculptures who had been fine arts students at Paris and who regularly corrected his work: René Fournier taught him the basics of modelling and transmitted the teachings of Marcel Gimond to him - Jean Lorquin, first Rome grand prix 1949, provided his vision and his knowledge but also a real analysis of sculpture. He presented his first individual exhibition at Villeneuve-sur-Lot when he was 24 years old. He was a Fondation de France winner in 1989 and Fondation Charles Oulmont winner in 1993. In the same year, he organised an exhibition of his work in the Musée Jean Jaures at Castres. Since then, his work is regularly present in Europe in art fairs and galleries. Almost 150 of his works were exhibited at the Lazaret Ollandini at Ajaccio in 2005. In 2006, Cahors and the Conseil Général du Lot consecrated a double exhibition to him at the Musée Henri Martin at Cahors and the Musée Rignault at Saint-Cirq-Lapopie. The Musée Marc Petit at the Lazaret Ollandini opened at Ajaccio on October 18th 2008.

PIGNON-ERNEST Ernest

From 1957, he works in an architectural firm and well developed his drawing practice. But in 1961-1962, he was sent to Algeria for a war he considers "the most significant event of his life." At that time, he began to draw with walnut stain. Since his return, he worked on topics like political messages to the Commune, immigrants, deportation, AIDS, the role of women in Africa, prisons, etc.

PINCHAS Burstein Maryan

Polish, American. Maryan's short life was full of tragedy. As a Polish Jew, he was interned and martyred by the Nazis. He was the only survivor from his family and only escaped the camps with his life by a miracle. With a scholarship from Israel, he studied at the Bezalel Art Institute at Jerusalem from 1948 to 1949. A tram accident at Tel Aviv resulted in his leg being amputated. Maryan had his first individual exhibition in 1949 at the Jerusalem YMCA. He moved to Paris in 1950 and spent three years at the Beaux-Arts. Despite several success (Prix des Critiques at the Biennale de Paris in 1959) and despite his role in the emergence of the 'Nouvelle Figuration' movement, he moved to New York in 1962. He became a US citizen in 1969. He died prematurely in 1977. Despite the challenges he had experienced, Maryan did not become, as he so easily could have, the painter of the camps, a witness of the Nazi extermination. Leaving hell, Maryan became a demiurge. He created the 'Comedie Humaine' pictorial world, filled with excessive creatures. He let the colour shout, distorting the lines to draw out an expression that is almost a carictature, he collected just as many figures of power (soldiers, judges, clerics) as of outcasts (toreadors, jugglers, prostitutes). Through this pictorial carnival with intentionally common references, Maryan has doubtlessly left a deep humanist message where his language seems to be aimed at warning us about what will always confront us at the infinite frontier that separates the victim from the executioner. A message that sends the viewer to his 'libre-arbitre' and his mirror. This language of Maryan, so personal but also so violent, has inspired numerous painters in subsequent generations. We can mention Philip Guston as just one example. Despite this, Maryan's work remains quite incomprehensible, deeply misunderstood.

When he was young he learnt to be an adjuster but he never worked as one. He had numerous little jobs, including a press designer, until he was 21 years old when he had to spend one and a half years in a sanatorium. He was sick and lived and rested in numerous villages of Haute-Provence. Here he discovered Louis Soutter's drawings which gave him his desire to draw. His first drawings were in Indian ink. His first structures date from 1959. They were presented at the Alphonse Chave gallery in 1962 and became his preferred method of expression. His first aphorisms were published in 1966. He moved to Paris in 1973 and started exhibiting in the Claude Bernard Gallery from 1984.

After studying at the Fine Arts, his works exhibited (painter, draftsman and printmaker) in Germany, Switzerland and France. He illustrated many books such as that of Louis Calaferte or that of Michel de Ghelderode.
